Spaghetti Western Orchestra scrapbook pages

this photo looks very yellow but is is in fact the same brown as the one above

I just LOVE the music to the Spaghetti westerns by Ennio Morricone and when I saw the Spaghetti Western Orchestra (SWO) on the Jules Holland’s show I knew I just had to see them live if they ever came to Edinburgh.  Well they did and I wasn’t disappointed – they were fantastic!
On the first page you can pull the tabs at the side to reveal the tickets for the show and a newspaper clipping.
As I don’t tend to take photographs of the actual concert I used the official photographs from their website (if you scroll down in their website you can watch a couple of clips) and traced the shooting cowboy silhouette from the CD cover.
I did try to do some image transfers from photos I took of a Wild West street Edinburgh but they didn’t work that well but it didn’t really matter as most of the images were going to be covered up.  In real life these pages look a nice warm brown colour but try as I might I could not get my photographs to look the same.

Encaustic landscape cards

My great friend Lizzie and I were playing with my encaustic kit the other day and we made a few cards each.  I am afraid I don’t have a photo of Lizzie’s but they were very much the same as these.

The colours of wax are all from the starter kit and the card used is the silk coated card (the same as I use for brayering).

Mens easel birthday card

Harry50thSml
I made this card for Harry’s 50th using a bottle cap as the bit that holds the easel up. I have made one similar to this before but I do like to keep most of my cards unique so I have changed a few things.  The stamps used are the same but the patterned paper and colours are different to the last one.
Inks: Memento Tuxedo black, Distress inks Brushed corduroy (very apt) and Frayed burlap
Card:  white card, Basic Grey patterned paper
Stamps:  Stampin up Circle of friendship, Personal Impressions Mens 1
Other:  beer bottle cap, diamond glaze, yellow and blue pen, Liquid applique, copper eyelet and blue ribbon, black gelly glaze pen, gold pen

I just had to make a card for Peter who was an enormous help repairing and sorting out some medical equipment for me over the last month.  I know the NHS is always in the news because they have got something wrong again but just where would I be without the good old NHS.  Due to modern technology I have been able to pee by means of electrical impulses sent to the bladder via an external transmitter along with an internal receiver.  When the equipment is all working correctly (which it does most of the time) you tend to take it for granted and it is only when things go wrong do you remember just how much you rely on it to go about your daily activities.  So many thanks to Peter at Finetech and also to Mr Fraser at the Spinal unit and most importantly to Professor Brindley who came up with the idea for a sacral implant all those years ago.

The inspiration for this card is again from The Craft Stamper magazine, October issue 2011 by Jo Capper-Sandon and it uses the free stamp from that issue.

Inks:  Dylusions Cyan, Vanilla custard, and Amber ink sprays, and a neon yellow spray, Black stazon ink
Card:  watercolour paper, white card, blue textured card
Stamp:  free Star stamp, Stampin up Thank you
Other:  The Crafters worshop Mini cubist mask. white gel pen, black Pitt pen, glitter pen, yellow highlighter pen

Encaustic anniversary card

I have been playing with my encaustic stuff again (after a long while) and made this card for Chris and Grace’s wedding anniversary using the indirect transfer technique with tissue paper.  I think this is my favourite technique so far but I do need a lot of practice still.  My great pal Lizzie joined me to play with the wax and I might just have got her a new hobby!
The trouble is that I don’t get my encaustic stuff out often enough so I have to go back to the basics each time and practice.

Waxes:  blues, browns and greens from the starter kit
Card:  encaustic card and an aperture card
Other:  acrylic sealer

Butterfly birthday card

ceara2012Sml

In the March 2012 issue of the Craft stamper magazine Riet van Zundert shows how to use your acrylic block to add colour to your card so I had a go with her technique for Ceara’s birthday card.  You basically ink up your acrylic block then swipe away any areas you don’t want colour on.  Then use your block like a stamp and press onto your card.  I stamped the pink colours first, then added the green  to the centre, then stamped the images normally and coloured them in.

Inks:  Distress inks Spun sugar and Bundled sage, Cosmic shimmer Angel mist, Memento Tuuxedo black
Card:  White, Black glitter card
Stamps:  Inkadinkado Mindscapes, Elusive images Easter grasses
Other:  Gelly roll glitter pen, Lime green stickles, black 1/2 pearls and nail heads, tiny flower sequins and seed beads

For a little something extra I made a steampunk bracelet.  It was a kit from John Lewis but I won’t be buying any more as the quality is very poor.  The metal is very soft and is a strange colour that is neither silver nor gunmetal colour.  Instead of the large metal heart they had in the kit I added a dragonfly in it’s place.  Just the addition of a few cogs apparently makes it steampunk….Hmmmm.

Granny’s button box Mother’s day card

I love the poem about Granny’s button box so I thought I would try and do a card all about it for my mum’s Mother’s day.  I have read a couple of slightly different variations to this and I have altered some of the spelling to how I think it should be (but I am not an expert in the Scott’s language).  It reminds me of all the times I have gone through mum’s old recipe books and button box with her and we would reminisce over the contents. It is funny how just a simple button can evoke memories. I remember some of the outfits mum made for me, some I loved and some not so much but I know just how much hard work and love went into making each item.  Thank you mum.

For the card I used a Lippy chick Flip book and decorated all of the pages with sewing related stuff.  I didn’t really intend it to be quite that brown but I do like the vintage feel that colour gives it.  Some of the green colour didn’t really show up due to my poor photography skills.

Inks:  Distress inks; Tea dye, Old paper, Worn lipstick and Antique Linen, Versafine Archival vintage Sepia, Memento Rhubarb stalk, Versamark with silver embossing powder, Anna Griffin Green
Card:  Ivory card, Flip book, Tag Image from Heritage papers
Stamps:  Eline Pellinknot Cross-stitch stamps, Toodles and Binks Very vintage set 2 La couture, Stampin up Canvas background
Other:  Buttons and thread, Antique brass charms, Studs, old pattern tissue, faux daisy trim

‘Granny’s Button Box’
by Joyce Averill
I maun sort oot this button box,
Noo gran his gone tae rest,
She’d niver throw even een awa,
Fae coat or suit or dress,
But pit them a in this old box,
For, losh, ye niver ken the day,
They’d come in handy for shewin on again.
Guid sakes, there maun be hunners here,
A colours, shape and size,
I’m sure they’re better thrown awa,
Keepin them wouldnae be wise.
They dinna match wi onything,
That we fowk wear the day,
Na, na, the scaffie’ll take them awa,
Nae matter fit ye say.
But wait a meenit, see this here!
This wis aff her wedding suit,
And this een here, I min fine,
Come aff ma buttoned boot.
My here’s the hook she used to cleek,
Each button into place,
While I sat there, a wee bit lass,
A soor look on ma face.
Noo this lot here, a tied wi string,
Wis aff ma velvet coat,
I couldnae hae been mair much than five,
Gan doon tae meet Da’s boat.
There wis a hat that gaed tae match,
Oh aye, I min that fine,
Jist fancy her hingin on tae them,
Aifter a this time.
See that bonny crystal een,
Fair glintin in the licht,
That wis a frock I wore till a waddin,
Fit a sicht!
A crepe de chine and frills and things,
And them a roon the neck,
Nae diamond iver shone as bricht,
As I did in the kirk.
She shew’d them on be gaslicht,
Each een pit on wi care,
Workin awa wi woven haunds,
Until her een were sair.
Noo this big black eens I ken fine,
Come aff Dad’s fishin breeks,
For he wis a deep sea fisherman,
I didnae see for weeks.
This rubber eens are aff his woollen dra’ers,
She knitted a the while,
The yarns a wool that she used up,
maun hae stretched fer monys a mile.
Here’s een come aff ma first dance frock,
That wis gey lang syne,
And look at this een aff ma gym slip,
Fan I wis only nine.
An army een aff ma tunic,
I wore fan in the war,
A jint tae dae ma little bit,
Tae bring the peace once more.
She grat the day I gaed awa,
And telt me tae tak care,
For I wis her only lassie,
And naebody loved me mair.
Here’s bits and bobs fae ma ane bairns claes,
She shew’d for them and a,
Knittin vests and socks tae keep them warm,
Fan the winter’s winds did blaw.
I can see there’s mair than buttons here,
But memories she loved to keep,
She left them a to me noo,
She’s gan tae her last sleep.
Fit! Throw them oot!
Na, na that’s mair than I can dae,
I’ll jist pit them in this button box,
That noo belangs tae me.
Fer I can see, that jist like Gran,
A hoarder I am tae,
Wi a box jist foo o memories,
I’ll keep till the day I dee.

Paisley art journal page

I have been looking closer to home for inspiration for my art journal and found that I am quite partial to the Paisley pattern.  Mum sent me a few samples of her paisley paper and Harry has a few Paisley ties, scarves and neckerchiefs, I have some Paisley papers too along with cushion covers, scarves and tops.  They are all quite different and if you have a look in wikepedia you find that it is a popular pattern style all over the world.

I made my Paisley art journal double page nice and bright using an idea from Sandy Steen’s Zentangle workout book along with the inspiration form all these papers and fabrics.  I might add more journalling to it later.

Art journal practice

practiceSml

A short while ago I took one of Traci Bautista’s workshops and one of the prompts was to do some big writing with a calligraphy brush and permanent India ink and to doodle over the black writing using a white pen.  I re-visited these pages and added colour to them just to play with some of my sprays and muck around with colour.
I used:  Dylusions spray ink Amber, Postbox red, Worn leather, Vanilla and Cyan,  Glimmer mist Cherry limeade, Prisma pencils with Sansador, black pen, white pen, fluorescent marker pens, cut out circle from a cross stitch mesh
